About The Parent Peace: Our Story

I knew there was something different about my son when he was an infant. When he was two years old, I sought the help of a parenting coach to help us manage his aggressive and defiant behavior. That would be the first in a line of many therapists, doctors, nutritionists, and alternative practitioners that were unable to “fix” my son.
His outbursts became a normal part of our lives that hindered social gatherings and vacations as well as daily life. He was prone to having one to seven daily outbursts. Any attempt to engage, redirect or calm him, escalated the behavior and lengthened the duration of the outburst.
Finding someone or something to “fix” my son became my obsession. He was eventually diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, ODD, anxiety and depression. But having fancy diagnoses did not bring us any closer to helping him. It felt like every therapist we saw, every new treatment we tried, only took us further from the connection we so desperately wanted with him.
It was during his second stay in a residential treatment center that things started to shift, but not just in him—in me. The more I learned about neurodivergence, the more I realized that I had been treating my son like a problem to be solved, instead of a person to be understood. I began learning to see him for who he is, his challenges and his gifts. I started to rebuild our relationship with empathy and patience, learning when to give space and when to provide support. In the process, I learned to look inward at my piece of this complicated puzzle. I realized that I had to do my own work and rebuild my relationship with myself before I could truly support my son. I now understand that the real work isn’t about fixing anyone. It’s about acceptance, forgiveness and unconditional love—for ourselves and our children.
